The Swarthmore Education Centre in Leeds is an absolute treasure trove of creative workshops and courses. I came across it as the jeweller Charlotte Whitmore is running jewellery making classes there and there are a whole host of different makers offering courses and workshops in printing to macrame, jewellery to stained glass.

Following her sell-out show Hand Me Downs in 2022, Annie Montgomerie returns to Yorkshire Sculpture Park in 2026 with a new exhibition Missies and Nippers.
Annie Montgomerie’s much-loved, hand-crafted animal figures inhabit a tender emotional space between childhood and adulthood, each showing familiar feelings of vulnerability, innocence, sadness, shyness and loneliness.
Montgomerie builds her intriguing three-dimensional figures by hand, from fragments of her own memories. The show features cats, dogs and foxes, alongside other exotic animals. Montgomerie sculpts the heads and faces with plasticine, layering this with fabric to achieve a stiff outer shell. Their bodies and arms are often constructed with a wire armature or found items, and are dressed in nostalgic, vintage finds from the 1970s and 1980s. Layered retro-patterned fabrics, jewellery, favourite toys and faux furs create a loved-to-death, thread-bare quality.
