Objects of Fashion
Hannah Lamb, who teaches in textiles at Bradford College is running an “Objects of Fashion: Unravelling Stories” one day online course at the V&A on Saturday 3rd October where you can explore objects of fashion that hold poignant traces of makers and wearers. Unravelling these embodied clues can reveal stories of the past, provide inspiration for creative works, and generate new knowledge.
Clothing and accessories like gloves, hats, or shoes are some of the most intimate and compelling of all objects of material culture because of their close connection to the body. Poignant traces of the makers and wearers embodied in objects of dress carry information from the past that might otherwise be inaccessible from written accounts. With careful study, patience, creativity and imagination, these clues can be unravelled to tell stories of the past, provide inspiration for creative works, and generate new knowledge. To Fashion
There has been lot of fuss made about M&S being at London Fashion Week to celebrate 100 years of the clothing but The Re:Directory has pointed out that this flies in the face of the British Fashion Council ethos, centring around sustainability and nurture local talent.
As Leigh rightly points out: “The crazy thing is, there is a LITERAL abundance of talent and creativity out there. They may be operating on shoestring budgets but I BEG YOU, be inspired my people, brands doing business, creating what you wear the right way.”
So please, have a look, be inspired and buy small and sustainable instead of following the big trends.
To Fashion Sustainably
Starting tomorrow is Sustainable Fashion Week, with hubs throughout the UK. You can find all the information about all the events at all the hubs HERE. Bradford is getting involved for the first time including the Society of Dyers and Colourists, as well as Huddersfield and Manchester.
As always, thank you for reading and please let me know if you have any workshops, exhibitions, books or online resources that you have seen and think might be interesting or useful, or if you are running a workshop or event, please let us know and we wold be happy to share. Have a good weekend and hopefully be back next week, Charlotte.
